wei wuxian had barely dusted off the magma from the kiln off his person when he gets rudely yanked to mo village and mo xuanyu's side. he appears before mo xuanyu still in his bloodied yiling laozu set up and theyre both ??? confused as fuck because what the hell that wasnt supposed to happen !

turns out the whole sacrificial summon array didnt account for the possibility of summoning a ghost king. so there was no soul replacement, mo xuanyu is still alive, and wei wuxian once again walks with the living. ish. hes still dead. technically

now what ?

well mo xuanyu mustve been pretty desperate to unsubscribe from the reincarnation cycle just to get revenge on his family so wei wuxian hears him out ,,, and really really doesnt like the hand that mo xuanyu has been dealt with in his life so hes like welp time to tap into ye olde wuxian the helping hand. might as well bring in some justice now that hes back and better than ever !

but first wwx shldnt walk around looking like the entire cultivation world's worst nightmare so they brainstorm a new identity for him in that little shack.

they end up deciding that wwx will be a distant mo cousin. for wwx's disguise, he gave himself the birth name mo ling and the courtesy name mo shanxi. he is mo yi, courtesy name mo xuanyu's, other maternal cousin but like further down the family tree. a fourth son of a fourth son. parents dead, siblings dead. lots of fours, lots of death in the identity and the name. it's funni, cuz wwx is dead and hes a ghost and- you get the idea.

mo shanxi's an eccentric ex-rogue cultivator whose cultivating career ended early at the hands of the late core-melting hand. he has no sword because no core. hes friendly with crows because rogue cultivator things. he has a dizi because hes a traveler, a peasant, decidedly not gentry. an absolutely fool-proof disguise. no one would guess hes wei wuxian at all ! no one !

they still bust into the meeting between madam mo and the lan juniors and wwx helps mxy embarrass the entire family. they also still stay around to watch shit happen and it's during this time where wwx gives mxy practical lessons on fighting and cultivation. not demonic cultivation, mind, wwx doesnt want to damage mxy's fledgling golden core.

mxy is witness firsthand how wwx just bluescreens and takes A Minute to process seeing adult lan wangji. mxy knows that lwj is One Fine Ass Man and he, too, would undoubtedly climb lwj like a tree but wwx's reaction to lwj is just ,,, different.

hm, mxy thinks. interesting.

mxy was not having the best time in his life. shit got way out of hand way too quickly. he cant do anything to help in the fight so hes just trying to keep himself alive while wwx is trying to save everyone. theres too many crows and ravens yelling.

mxy knows wwx is some kind of powerful ghost or whatever but now is not the time for a bad dizi concert ! senior wei please !!

mxy just feels really out of his depths right now as he watches everything unfold from his safe(ish) place high up a tree with a couple of wwx's creepy red-eyed crows.

he watches as the fucking ghost general answers wwx's dizi calls apparently ? (mxy may be half insane but he still knows the ghost stories they all tell about the yiling laozu and his ghost general)

he watches as wwx attempts to lead the ghost general to safety, and how his attempt is thwarted by none other than hanguang-jun himself. and then mxy is forced to watch the world's most awkward, most tense reunion in all the earth.

and then mxy sees sandu shengshou fucking whip wwx and attempt to do it a second time and he really, really cant just sit there and watch his saviour and senior be bullied.

so mxy jumps down, startles the living shit out of everyone, and proceeds to yell at them all. accuses jc of harrassment, of abuse of power, of weird kinks. wwx catches onto what mxy is doing and joins in the insanity, adding that lwj is more his type for good measure

senior wei, mxy thinks, watching lwj gaze at wwx with something in his eyes. what the actual fuck ?

if anyone asks how the hell they both ended up becoming guests at the cloud recesses, mxy will gladly tell them that it's all wwx's fault. at least mxy ended up being roomed at actual guest quarters. god knows what kind of shit is happening with wwx getting roomed in the jingshi of all places

Mò Yí (莫怡) — mo xuanyu's birthname in this au ! i like to think his mother gave him that birth name because she really wanted him to have a happy future :]

Mò Líng (莫玲) — 玲 is an onomatopoeia, referring to the sound jades make when they are hit. i like to think wwx chose this name on the spot absolutely not thinking about how a certain jade was doing lol

Mò Shànxì (莫善戲) — now this one is fun ! i took this from one of the poems in the Classic of Poetry aka Shijing aka the oldest existing collection of Chinese poetry and one of the Five Classics. it's taken from the third paragraph of the poem Qi Yu from the Odes of Wei (as in the state of Wey. unfortunately not the same wei in wwx's name. thats a diff state)

瞻彼淇奧、綠竹如簀。 有匪君子、如金如錫、如圭如璧。 寬兮綽兮、猗重較兮。 [善戲] 謔兮、不為虐兮。 Look at those recesses in the banks of the Qi, With their green bamboos, so dense together! so 善戲 should translate to "good at theatrical shows" as in he's good at putting on a show ! since mo ling is essentially just a role wwx is playing and all lmao. BUT ALSO the last sentence where i took the characters describes wwx pretty well. the sentence describes the lord aka the subject of the poem as someone who is good at playing games, jokes etc. but his jokes would never be intended to harm or to be rude. so wwx :]

his disguise's courtesy name also has a nice though subtle common element w lan wangji's birth name since the zhan is thought to also be taken from the five classics uwu

A majority of the fic focuses on Jiang Cheng stalking WWX after they accidentally reunite because Lan Sizhui & Jin Ling start dating? A few pivotal scenes I can remember include jc taking Jin Ling and friends to a concert (which upsets LSZ's parents because he's been stalking wwx) and JC cornering WWX in a car and trying to kiss him. For the life of me, I can't find it anywhere.

B. Post Sunshot Campaign Wei Wuxian is prisoned in Qinghe Nie and Nie Huisang is trying to bring Wei Wuxian back to his cheerful self by braiding his hair and bringing him books but he is being threatened by Jin Guangyao to not talk. Jin Guangyao is also intercepting all letters. Jiang Yanli is alive. Incomplete last I read it.

would love to hear your thoughts on the evita revival in general!! (staging, choreo, performances, chemistry, etc)

Staging wise it very much has a concert vibe if you’ve ever seen the recent regent park production of JCS very much imagine that but evita. Honestly the use of cameras was restrained only being used in act two at appropriate moments (loved how Eva was dressed in the classic look for don’t cry for me emphasising how much it is a performance whilst performing the final broadcast in her regular look as the ‘real Eva’). Choreography was stunning turned rainbow tour into even more of a bop (you have not lived until you’ve seen peron dancing). Performance wise what more can be said about Rachel she is the moment and was in complete control of the stage from the moment she first appeared. Diego was amazing as che really captured the essence of the character also loved how he almost seemed to be Eva’s conscience at times particularly during high flying adored. James really stood out to me as peron. I was nervous over how young he looks but his height difference and his general stage presence sold me completely. Aaron really stole his scenes as the worst most pathetic tango singer you’ve ever seen 10/10. Bella really portrayed the mistress as a mirror to why Eva could have been (right down to being costumed the same) and broke my heart with another suitcase.

Since their formation in 2016, the career of Ljubljana's Joker Out has been continuously taking off. Since the 2023 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, the name of this band - made up of five young men from Slovenia - has been on everyone’s lips. On their European tour in spring 2024, the band, together with two support acts, also graced Cologne with a concert at Die Kantine. We were there to attend the performance.

Sector 5 from Berlin opened the evening, reaching the international fans in attendance with lyrics and stage announcements in English. Their musical mix of pop, rock, and rap positively surprised not just us, but got the rest of the crowd singing along as well. Confidently and professionally, the four musicians captured the room's attention and presented a set that was definitely worth the experience.

JC Stewart, a Northern Irish musician who lives and works in London, followed as second support act. He delighted fans not just with the charming story of how he crossed paths with Joker Out in an Irish pub in London, but also with a confident one-man show that needed no more than his talented voice and a guitar to convince the crowd.

During the break before the main act, the anticipation in the room rose noticeably, and the excitement was palpable. Joker Out entered the stage to the euphoric chants and cheering of fans.

Gola, from their debut album Umazane Misli (2021), kicked off the evening's set, and the reactions of the crowd were unmistakable – everyone in the hall was captivated from the very first second.

That a band whose lyrics are mainly in Slovenian is able to win over an international crowd, let alone get them to dance and sing along, is not just rare, but also speaks to the engaging personalities of the five musicians. Whether Ona, Vse Kar Vem, Demoni or Plastika, the band’s stage presence tore down all language barriers, demonstrating impressively that music connects people regardless of the language spoken.

However, there was more than one linguistic peculiarity that evening: for example, singer Bojan Cvjetićanin even used the song Tokio to teach the excited fans a bit of Japanese.

One highlight was the as-yet unreleased song Behind Those Eyes, whose original working title was said to have been the German word "Schlager", as the band revealed with a wink. The official release of this song on their announced second [sic: third] album will certainly be highly anticipated.

Similarly well-received by fans was the ballad Metulji ("Butterfly" in English), which was, in accordance with the title, performed by Bojan wearing pink wings and butterfly headgear in the middle of the crowd.

Joker Out opted to pass on the classic "encore game" in which the band retreats backstage in anticipation of being called back by the crowd. Instead, they transitioned into the long-awaited karaoke version of Umazane Misli, where not just the band, but also the fans, are invited to sing the verses [sic: the chorus] in their national language.

From German to Polish, Russian, Greek, and more - anyone brave enough to take the microphone that Bojan carried through the crowd got their own chance to put on a little live performance.

With Carpe Diem and Novi Val, the 16-song set then came to a successful end, and Joker Out were seen off the stage with a well-earned thunderous applause.

We were happy to have experienced this evening and could write many more words to describe the talent, the performance, and the charisma of Joker Out – and yet, nothing can do these five musicians justice except seeing them live for yourself.

If we get our way, this will not be our last Joker Out concert. As soon as the chance presents itself, we'll be happy to see them again.

NS You know what I'm driving anymore. I've been thru the cars stages you know & I've got a Farrari sitting in my garage & I never drive it. But I bought a Bronco like (MJF really?) 3 years ago when I was down here in LA & I love the truck man...(laughing). That's my car. And I've got a couple of Harleys - you know - & I'm more into the bikes (MJF yeah)than the cars anymore.

JC I drive a big black Suburban with a kick ass stereo system (MJF laughing). (NS laughing) I put all my kids in the back & tell 'em to Shut up & that's it.

SP This is Steve & I have a little Mercedes, it's the first Mercedes I bought when I joined the band. (MJF wow) And I still have it & it still runs nice. Then I have the Portuguese Love Machine.

MJF What is? What is that?

SP Which is...the Portuguese Love Machine is a ..ah...1997 Super Sport Impala with a ah... super charger (MJF laughing) ah... super charger with a header (more laughing)& ah..a blower on it. (more laughing).

MJF It's a muscle car. Muscle..

SP Muscle car ... yeah...a 90s muscle car.

SP (laughing nervously) I ...ummm ... I injured myself in Hawaii. I ..ummm...we'd just finished the record & three days after we'd finished it I was in Hawaii & I went on a feverish hike which I had done many times in this one area & ummm for some reason that day it was just too hot & I went at it too much & I tore myself up a little bit.

MJF Well, I'm glad you're doing OK. Well, in case you missed it a few minutes ago the guys said they they were going to be doing a big concert tour. You guys are going to be touring the world next year & should be here in DC sometime next summer. I want to know what song you're most looking forward to performing live in DC when Journey returns to Washington with MIX 107.3. What song do you guys really like to play?

NS You know... for me I get asked this a lot, and...and I can't come up with a favorite song. You know ... it's sorta like..you know...they're all great songs. And it's like, how you put them together that makes the show flow well, & you know, I think from night to night that - you know - different songs happen -- one song will be a little better than the night before than next night - the next one.

JC Right. I love to play Separate Ways. I just think that's a rockin' thing & the band just gets into it & it just kinda goes to another place everytime we play it. It's a cool song.

SP I like.. I like Send Her My Love. There's just something about the lyrics of that song..uhh, "it has been so long since I've seen your face", I mean there's just something timeless about it. And it ..it used to sound really great when it would be started off ..&... echo out across the stage into the arena. You know ... it has that...ahh ... Steve Smith intro on it...it's ... it's nice.

JC Ummm, I married the love of my life, Elizabeth, & we have 3 kids. I just had twins with her, 8 months old. (MJF - really??) CALLER Hey, this is Brian from Germantown, MD. I'd like to know what inspired you guys to get back together after you broke up.

JC Steve..Steve started the call. He put it into motion. He..ah...I was on a tour .. um... in Tampa doing this radio station; playing golf down there for my solo thing & he called & said, 'What's going on' & I said, 'I'm doing this little record.' & he said, 'Let's talk & get back together & see if there's a possibility of ...you know...reforming the band.' And so we got Neal & we ...we had coffee a lot."

SP (laughing) We had many cups of coffee.

NS Many coffees.

JC Yeah, & we talked about how we could design this thing ..um... to really fly right. We had to get our business in order & then ..you know.. we went right to it pretty much. We took the band & we went to LA & had a blast in this room & it was unbelievable. That's when my wife called & said she was pregnant actually. (laughing)

SP & JC (together) The same day we rehearsed.(laughing)

JC It was like..oh my God & then Neal of course his wife was pregnant later (NS - yeah [laughing]). And so like...yeah...we've had babies & CDs come out.

SP I was...umm...This is Steve Perry by the way...I was going to Jonathan Cain's house to meet Neal & Jon there to write some stuff & I carry a mini cassette player with me around & this song just came to my head ... & I had the chorus, when you love a woman in my mind so I sang it into the cassette player & then I got there & we just started working on the song & the guys finished it. We got it all done. It just sorta came real quick. It's about what should happen inside of ya' when you really do love a woman.

MJF Well, you know what I heard that...uhh..this is like the...umm.. biggest song you guys have done in the last 10 years, so wait a minute...just a second...wait a minute...give me the cue...yeah, there you go...(the dj begins playing When You Love A Woman). i promised to post some thoughts from both of the concert days at kulttuuritalo so i'm gonna be putting them under a read more :)

saturday 2.3.

i arrived at the venue some time before 9 am

i feel like i always say this but the people that i hang out with at concerts and while queueing are always super nice. i got to know new people, meet mutuals and hang out with so many people i'd gotten to know at previous gigs i'd been to

just remembered that i think i forgot to thank @king-krisu for letting me tag along to their apartment to warm up my pizza that tasted like cardboard so i'm doing it now, kiitos!

buying hand and foot warmers for the queueing was the best purchase ever

when we were let inside, the staff was apparently not informed on where the cloakroom was actually open and if people who were over 18 but didn't have the ticket could go to the +18 side and everything was just a mess and ppl were running around and didn't know where to go

i did get front row on kris' side and it was actually my first time there, i'd always been on jan and nace's side before that

i've listened to pilvet pilvet for a while now and i was so happy to actually see them live, couldn't ask for a better opener

jc stewart was also very good! i'd never heard of him or his songs before but i tried to learn some of them before the gig lol

i feel like we've all seen so much from the soundcheck and gigs from videos and photos that i don't really have that much to add

when kiki came to put the setlist right in front of us we were like no it can't be this short they're definitely gonna play more songs. and they didn't 🥲

it was so nice to see them all actually move around a lot more now that they could

kris kicked straight towards me multiple times during the show and i kept thinking what have i done to deserve this

i completely fell in love with šta bih ja and bluza was so good too!!!

as the first gig on tour i kinda felt like they were still warming up after not performing for a while but still it was so good and i loved this concert so much

after the concert i went out with some friends i first met at the gig in tampere on the nordic tour :)

sunday 3.3.

i was supposed to go hang out in the queue for the day but i slept so bad and i was honestly in a bad mood because of that so i just stayed in bed for the whole day until it was time to leave to the venue with my friend and we were there just before the doors opened

i already posted my friend's thoughts from the show as a non-fan and you can find it here

i have a lot of thoughts that i wrote down on monday about going to a concert as a fan with a non-fan vs. alone but i'm not gonna be yapping about it in this post

i was kinda far back and i'm short so i didn't really see that well and i made the mistake of wearing a hoodie instead of what i was planning to wear so it was also extremely hot

this setlist was more to my taste with barve oceana and padam

the new song took me straight on a cruise ship to sweden

when they announced ruisrock the response of the audience was so loud!

i had a fan with me and i was fanning myself during vse kar vem and i just saw bojan looking at me kinda worried but when he saw me singing along he smiled and i almost started crying

i feel like they were more relaxed during this concert and that's understandable with the first concert being more of a rehearsal as the first concert of the whole tour

when we got out literally everyone was freaking out about everything that happened and saying how much better it was than yesterday

i was so tired and felt kinda sick that we just went to get some food after sitting down for a while and then i went back to my hotel room and that was it

overall i had a such a fun weekend! thanks to everyone who i spent time with <3 would've loved to talk to even more of you guys! next up is london and of course ruisrock in the summer :)

Happy Holy Week! So this little idea I’ve had ready and been sitting on since January. I originally had the idea to share the tracks through the week as they occurred during each respective day but I thought it’d be better to go ahead and just let everyone have the full product to enjoy as Easter approaches this year. For this project I wanted to (for the most part) go with cast recordings completely different to what I used for certain songs in my “ultimate mix” from years ago (but again, in my opinion, there’s some particular choices repeated that I just think are the absolute best and definitive.) I also made a rule to myself to not *repeat* any cast recordings used in this mix, which was indeed challenging, but I honestly love the final product so much and I’m so excited the time has come to share it with you all. I recommend you start with the 1996 west end revival (spotify, youtube). the insrumentation is great, the quality of the recording is crisp, and the performers are top-notch. steve balsamo as jesus is definitely the star of this one, his voice is very light and pure but he also portrays the character's inner conflict magnificently.

for comparison, there is also the original 1971 broadway cast recording (spotify, youtube). this is one of my favourite versions!

if you actually want something to watch, there is the 1973 film (spotify, youtube, I think the film can be rented on YT as well, I borrowed the DVD from my local library haha). the film also has a magnificent cast, many people consider ted neeley the best jesus ever and he has an unique take on the role and a gorgeous voice. carl anderson as judas is also just superb. I think the best word to decribe this version is "raw", it's really haunting.

the original 1970 concept album (spotify, youtube) with ian gillan of deep purple as jesus and murray head as judas is also a must-listen! both singers are just divine, both their performances easily hold up against newer productions with ease, they're just divine.

there is also the 2000 film, watchable on youtube (the album on spotify). jerome pradon plays judas and he is absolutely glorious at it. dude is going absolutely off the rails and his voice is so whiny and he's so deliciously vindicative in the end. I've gotten the impression his performance can be sort of hit-or-miss, but I really like it!

for something more recent, there's also the 2012 arena tour (youtube) with ben forster as jesus and the legendary tim minchin as judas. a lot of people like this one, and while I personally don't like it much, maybe you will! there is also the 2018 live in concert (spotify, youtube). a solid, good production I think.

Goodbye, April

This month I went to watch an orchestra concert, celebrated Easter by hosting family at our house, and subbed for a barre fitness class. I’m ending April and kicking off May with a short trip to Minnesota! One of my sisters lives there and tomorrow is her birthday, so my other sister and I are going to spend it with her. We left early this morning and I come back on Saturday night. I haven’t been here in three years and the three of us haven’t been on a trip together in almost ten years, so it’s exciting!

1. 1973 film- The MVP. Judas is the best. Jesus slays. Mary is beautiful. I love them all. God bless, 10/10

2. Arena tour 2012- Ben Forster is perfect as Jesus. I LOVED the Jesus Mary Judas relationship. 2010's fashion is either a hit or a miss. It's a hit here. 9/10

Streamer!gf for Hasan… maybe you two were made aware of each other during lockdown and where you were both streaming a ton maybe you were guests on each others streams and were awkwardly getting to know each other and developing crushes while you’re trying to just react to whatever politics are happening or maybe JCS or whatever your niche is on stream.

Maybe swiftie streamer gf and she makes Hasan do blind reacts when new Taylor’s versions come out or anything Taylor related and he’s like 😃😃😃I’m lost but love that for you. So there’s streams of you basically just explaining all the Taylor lore.

Miniminter does this thing on his gaming channel called "Talia Tuesday" where he has his wife Talia on his gaming channel once a week. I can you doing that with Hasan, where it's one stream a week he's just on it. Sometimes it's crafting nights, others it's baking, I can also see make-up stream (both him and yours), or streams where you paint each other's nails. Such a different vibe from his stream, he actually enjoys it a lot more than he'd admit to

Some (More) Reflections on Casting

Hello, everyone! First, some recent updates to contextualize this post:

I've hung out my shingle! (For those who aren't American, it's a slang phrase that means one has started a business; it's commonly used by professionals like lawyers or doctors, and dates from the 19th century, when legend has it such pros would paint signs on the shingles of their house to advertise their new practice.) In my case, this means I'm opening my inbox -- both email and here -- to consult on productions of JCS as a published expert on the show, whether you want help with casting, dramaturgy, general advice, etc. Whatever your concept or your first impression of JCS, my efforts can help you make an incredible piece of theater that will satisfy your audience. The details are on the main page of my book (see pinned post), but I'm also reachable here. To date, Utopia Opera, Ltd. in Manhattan and Tumblr user @theredspecials can attest to the level of expertise I provide. I hope more will also be able to do so one day!

I've now sat in on the casting process for a JCS production. This means that I have some real-world experience in the screening and audition process for the show (in this case, Utopia's), and have some concrete advice to give for those casting the show in the future, which follows.

I've alluded elsewhere on this blog to the fact that there are two basic flavors of JCS, which I refer to as "pre-" and "post-1996." (This post breaks it down the most fully without getting too caught in the weeds.) Which version one was first exposed to plays a significant role in the type of JCS one wants to present, as one always remembers their first. This means every subsequent generation to 1970, or even to 1996, has had their own entry point with an established version. The Brown Album may not be the first version of JCS one experiences.

More specifically, each established version is "of its era." Popular music takes many forms, and these days, classic rock isn't exactly the lingua franca it used to be. Especially today, we're not trying to pull young folks who know how to sing this new-fangled rock stuff off the street anymore; theater kids typically know, and are maybe even trained in, some form of homogenized "contemporary musical theater" pop sound that is a lot like what you (mostly) get in post-1996 JCS. Not their fault, but still something you must deal with.

What this means for you, the prospective director/presenter/whatever: you have to decide early and firmly about what kind of JCS you want to do, because if you have the pre-1996 JCS in mind, your audition pool -- especially cis male vocalists primarily trained in this newer style -- will mostly sound like (and probably be most familiar with) some form of post-1996 JCS, and you must be prepared to adjust accordingly, whether that means familiarizing them with the form and breaking them out of their comfort zone (because you can't expect them to instantly "get" unfamiliar terrain) or re-setting your own expectations.

Post-1996 JCS Prep

If you're fully prepared to embrace the revival sound, you're fine. In fact, you have far less of an uphill climb. I might urge you in the direction of, say, the 2011 Vienna concert cast rather than the 2012 arena tour or 2018 NBC Live renditions so that some of the original flavor is retained, but that's up to you. Other than that, you're pretty much all set. You will find a satisfying audition pool and have a Great Mcfriggin Time.

Pre-1996 JCS Prep

Your audition pool will still be the same, and you may have to live with that. However, there are ways to get the sound you want, even from those with "professional training."

Cast outside your typical pool. This is the most obvious piece of advice: lean into the club world and look for classic rock cover bands or anybody in metal, especially if they're the (sadly now rarefied) Rob Halford variety of screamer. However, because this is typically a steadier paying gig than theater (as tenuous as live music can be) or because theater is an unfamiliar realm to them, don't be surprised if you get a lot of pushback and nos, in which case refer to points 2 through 6.

Don't be afraid to bend gender. Seriously. Especially with precedents like the Indigo Girls cast and She Is Risen, my experience with Utopia was that female(-presenting) performers were the most ready to "go there" and really stepped up to the plate. Don't be afraid to guide them in the direction of a particular sound, but first don't shy away from casting them!

Immerse them in pre-1996 JCS. There are several solid examples of what to do (Brown Album, OBC, original French cast [in places], definitely live Australian cast, '73 film soundtrack, Camilo Sesto, California Youth Theatre, Australian revival cast, Indigo Girls cast) as well as what not to do (Alan Caddy studio cast, 1992 20th anniversary cast) from the pre-1996 era in the "Listening" section of my Recommendations chapter. For some, it may be even more nuanced than that -- yes to this from here, no to that from there, etc. Either way, the point is the same: the more they are influenced away from the newer sound, the less they'll refer to it.

Steer them toward the right variety of post-1996 JCS. There are at least three at the above link (2001 Hungarian revival, and the Vienna 2005 and 2011 concert casts) that manage to recapture some of the original energy musically while also erring on the side of post-1996 sounds and abilities. It'd be a shame to blindly ignore it.

Emphasize volume. Legend has it that George Abbott, one of Broadway's greatest all-time musical comedy directors (he lived to be 107!), used to stand in the back of the theater with a sign that said "Loud is Good." In the days before electronic amplification, this was very solid advice; you got your chin up, you projected with good support, and you aimed for the back row. "Loud is Good" is similarly useful advice if you're aiming for a pre-1996 JCS vibe, not just because it gives the soundboard something to pick up with the all-important microphones, but also because "contemporary musical theater technique" only goes so far. If you're telling your cast that they can vary their intensity for emotional shading, but that they must stay loud at all times, sooner or later, something that sounds more like classic rock is going to come out of them the harder they push, just because they're exercising the muscle to its limits and then some. Don't encourage this to the extent that they endanger their vocal health, but work for the results you desire.

Immerse them in music from the period in which JCS was written. This is perhaps the most important step you can take. If they're unfamiliar with the form, then they need to understand how it works. Devote time in the pre-production process to creating targeted playlists of music from the pre-1996 JCS era for your potential audition pool to hear, and reinforce listening to it during the rehearsal period. If they're steeped in the sound, that's what they'll start to emulate.

Playlist Suggestions

The following are some artist recommendations for music that you can target at specific groups you're seeking out to audition. The casting call for the 50th-anniversary tour was a particular help here, mixed with some of my own intuition.

(Note that wherever influence lists are combined, this is designed partly with logistical considerations in mind; for example, most productions target their PETER group to understudy JESUS and their SIMON crowd for JUDAS.)

GENERAL PURPOSES: The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Supremes (the "Soul Girls" in the title number in particular need this sort of tight pop-soul sound)

PETER/JESUS: James Taylor for the more tender moments, Rod Stewart or Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) for the real throat-shredding stuff

SIMON/JUDAS: Stevie Wonder, Murray Head, any Northern Soul or R&B artists of the era, maybe even a little gospel from the time

MARY: Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Gloria Jones, Janis Joplin

PILATE: Kind of a broad spectrum here, but think Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, and especially Robert Plant for the big "Don't let me stop..." moment

Failsafe Options

Despite your best efforts, however, some performers just will not absorb this stuff. You get different turn-out for every show, and it's catch-as-catch-can. If you are specifically striving for pre-1996 JCS but have people who can't break out of post-1996 training, there are characters whose roles skew "typical theater" enough that they can probably get away with not quite matching the sound.

If you need to bury your "immovable theater kids" in the mix, the best spots are the authority figures: PILATE, CAIAPHAS, ANNAS, and HEROD.

PILATE -- Well, they cast Barry Dennen, after all, seeking an actor for that part as far back as the Brown Album. He didn't necessarily have to sound that rock.

CAIAPHAS -- With this one, you'll get a bass if you're lucky and a baritone if you're pressed, and as long as he can swing a little bit with the music, you're fine with a musical theater person.

ANNAS is a generic baritenor who's not asked to do anything too uncomfortable.

As far as HEROD is concerned, I mean… that's literally the old-fashioned brassy Broadway sound. That guy doesn't have to sound rock at all if he doesn't want to; hell, in many instances, he probably doesn't need to sing. This role is more about the comedy, and indeed a local production may be able to boost ticket sales by treating it as a revolving-door cameo for stand-up comics in the area, assuming a good director can break them of their tendency to be "on" and help them to improvise within the character's confines.

In a modern AU setting, what does a typical date look like for them?

Well, they usually go to see a ballet or an opera. Jaime isn't a big fan of them, but for Cersei, he is ready to make an effort and he is the one always planning their night out, tho sometimes Cersei plans concerts or movies night. After the ballet or the opera, Jaime drives them to a fancy restaurant, usually their favorite one and they eat, laugh, talk about their day and reminisce about their childhood. They end the night by coming home and they have sex, they just can't help it. When they don't want to go out, they do a movie night at home. Cersei orders take out, and they eat while watching a movie. They usually argue over which movie they are going to watch, but eventually Cersei wins the argument and they watch a horror movie or a thriller. They snuggle on the couch under a blanket, and sometimes Cersei falls asleep and Jaime has to carry her to bed.

What jobs they would have? 

Cersei would follow Joanna's path and be an art philanthropist. She owns an art gallery and exposes artists from around the world. As for Jaime, he would be a cop, but then leave after convincing Tywin to allow them to get married so he would be his heir and become the new CEO of his business after his death. Jaime hates this work, and gets most of his ideas from Cersei, but he won Cersei's hand in exchange so he makes an effort to make it work.

What’s a really significant moment in their relationship?

Oh, their wedding day is pretty much important. They know people are distraught and mostly shook by the idea of them getting married, but they are still coming, out of curiosity. Jaime and Cersei don't care about that, they just want to get married and they make it a beautiful day. Jaime can't help, but calls Cersei "my wife" after the wedding, all the time. But one moment that is really significant is the birth of their children. Jaime is with Cersei in the birthing room each time, never leaving her and holding her hand and breathing encouraging words. When their babies are placed on Cersei's chest, they are both flooded with love. As parents, they both become more protective of their little family, and Cersei's heart swells with love everytime Jaime shares a moment with their cubs, which happens a lot. She has seen every facet of her brother, but her favorite is his father's facet. Also, Joffrey would so be a daddy's little boy 🥺 He follows Jaime everywhere, and his first word is "Papa".

What would happen if they never met?

Oh, hard question because who is Jaime without Cersei, and who is Cersei without Jaime? I think they would always feel like something is missing in their life, a missing puzzle piece they can't find, especially if they have been separated at birth. Jaime would be a golden boy, I believe. Having affairs with different women, but never settling down because no one matches his spirit. As for Cersei, she would probably marry but it's not a love story. She is more likely coerced into it. She hates her husband, and she would never have children. They would pretty much hate their lives, and have difficulty finding real love. 🙃
